Regal Arch, Sandstone Mountain

Regal Arch is located on the south east slope of Sandstone Mountain in the Babylon area of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. The arch is a little over 150 feet below the peak of sandstone mountain. The arch is a split arch with the left side resembling the head of a lion.

You can get to the arch by a couple of different routes. The easiest way is to follow the Horse Trail, off the Sandstone Mountain Trail, around to the south side of the mountain. From there pick your way up to the arch. The shortest route to the arch is up a steep drainage on the west side of Sandstone Mountain. You will reach a high saddle and then travel down south east to the arch.

On this occasion we followed the Horse Trail route up, then continued up to the summit and from there down the west side drainage.

At about 3 miles turn left off the main road to a Fenced Parking Area about 200 feet from the main road.

Road Condition

The road to the main parking area from the Leeds turnoff descends gradually and is quite rough and sandy in places. A high clearance vehicle may be needed to travel this road. Also this road can be sand covered in places making it difficult to return as the return is uphill. The main road which continues on to the Virgin River and the historic Stormont Silver Mill is steep and rocky and requires a 4 wheel drive vehicle or ATV.

The Trail

From the Sand Cove parking lot follow the Flicker Trail 1/3 mile to the start of the Sandstone Mountain Trail.

Follow the Sandstone Mountain Trail across the sandy hills along the western flank of the mountain. At about 3/4 mile you will pass a deep major wash on your right where there is an opening in the fence and you will see the steep slope up between the two mountain peaks. Scramble down into the wash and pick your way up the opposite steep drainage to the summit. This is a steep and difficult route and we have not ascended this slope from the bottom.

The main Sandstone Mountain trail then continues for another 260 yards to a horse step-over which is the start of the Horse Trail. Follow the Horse Trail around to the south side of the mountain for a distance of 1/2 mile. From there, ascend the more gradual slope north to the arch a distance of about 250 yards.

From the arch continue up the mountain to the saddle between the two mountain peaks and ascend the steep drainage to the west. This is a very difficult descent and not for the fainthearted. Once in the major wash at the bottom follow this wash until it intersects the main Sandstone Trail which returns to the Flicker Trail and the parking lot.

The arch location is N37.20996° W113.32176°.
